Well if you haven\u2019t watched the movie Castaway, you should.\u00a0 Tom Hanks was fantastic and this movie is now firmly entrenched as one of my \u201cTop Ten\u201d.\u00a0 Tom Hanks plays the role of Chuck Noland.\u00a0 There is a quote from the movie that overwhelmed me with insight on how to deal with the challenges of life, like having a serious IRS tax problem.\u00a0 To understand the quote, one would need to have some idea of what lead up to Chuck\u2019s monologue.<\/p>\n
Chuck and his girlfriend Kelly were deeply in love.\u00a0 There was no doubt that they were planning to get married.\u00a0 The last time they saw each other was shortly before Christmas.\u00a0 Chuck gave Kelly a little present that was obviously an engagement ring.\u00a0 Chuck worked for Fed Ex and was on his way to a location somewhere in the Pacific.\u00a0 In route the Fed Ex jet crashed into the ocean.\u00a0 All aboard were killed except for Chuck who miraculously climbed into a raft and eventually made his way to an uninhabited island.<\/p>\n
Kelly assumed that Chuck was killed and eventually married and had a daughter.\u00a0 Four years later, Chuck was able to escape the island and the barrier reef that surrounded it with the aid of a sail that was made out of two sides of a plastic portable-toilet that washed ashore.<\/p>\n
Chuck went to Kelly\u2019s home and after seeing that she was married and had a daughter, he knew that there was no possibility of marrying Kelly.\u00a0 Kelly was also overcome with emotion at the realization that her life had progressed to the point that she no longer could be with Chuck.\u00a0 They still deeply loved each other but each one had to accept that their love for each other could have no future manifestation.<\/p>\n
After leaving Kelly\u2019s home, Chuck went to the home of a friend to share his feelings about his situation.\u00a0 Here is his dialogue from that visit.<\/p>\n
We had both done the math<\/strong><\/p>\n Kelly added it all up<\/strong><\/p>\n Knew she had to let me go<\/strong><\/p>\n I added it up<\/strong><\/p>\n Knew I had lost her<\/strong><\/p>\n Because I was never going to get off that island<\/strong><\/p>\n I was going to die there, totally alone<\/strong><\/p>\n I was going to get sick or get injured or something<\/strong><\/p>\n The only choice I had<\/strong><\/p>\n The only thing I could control<\/strong><\/p>\n Was when and how and where that was going to happen, so<\/strong><\/p>\n I made a rope<\/strong><\/p>\n And I went up to the summit to hang myself<\/strong><\/p>\n I had to test it, you know<\/strong><\/p>\n Of course, you know me, and the weight of the log snapped the limb off the tree<\/strong><\/p>\n I couldn\u2019t even kill myself the way I wanted to<\/strong><\/p>\n I had power over nothing<\/strong><\/p>\n That\u2019s when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket<\/strong><\/p>\n I knew somehow that I had to stay alive, somehow\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n I had to keep breathing<\/strong><\/p>\n Even though I had no reason to hope<\/strong><\/p>\n And all my logic said that I would never see this place again<\/strong><\/p>\n So that\u2019s what I did<\/strong><\/p>\n I stayed alive<\/strong><\/p>\n I kept breathing<\/strong><\/p>\n Then one day that logic was proven all wrong<\/strong><\/p>\n Because the tide came in and gave me a sail<\/strong><\/p>\n And now here I am<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019m back in Memphis talking to you<\/strong><\/p>\n I have ice in my glass<\/strong><\/p>\n And I\u2019ve lost her all over again<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019m so sad I don\u2019t have Kelly<\/strong><\/p>\n But I\u2019m so grateful she was with me on that island<\/strong><\/p>\n And I know what I have to do now<\/strong><\/p>\n I have to keep breathing<\/strong><\/p>\n Because tomorrow the sun will rise<\/strong><\/p>\n Who knows what the tide could bring?<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh, how I wish I could write lines like that.\u00a0 I was awe struck with several key points that I have experienced in my own life.<\/p>\n First, life will eventually put us in a situation where we have to deal with something we are not prepared for or ever imagined could happen to us.\u00a0 It may be the death of a loved one, a divorce, a substance abuse problem, a business failure, a serious IRS tax problem or just the awful realization of our physical limitations or emotional weaknesses and we feel we \u201chave power over nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n Second, when we have one of these experiences we have to eventually, do \u201cthe math.\u201d\u00a0 We have to accept what has happened.\u00a0 We can wish and pray and cry, but time cannot be reversed and we have no option except to acknowledge and submit to our situation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is no route around or over or under it. There is no other way, than through our experience.\u00a0 And dealing with the IRS is like that as well.\u00a0 You have to do, \u201cthe math,\u201d and realize that you need some professional IRS help.<\/p>\n Third, our situation may be so devastating that we conclude like Chuck Noland, that we are \u201cnever going to get off that island.\u201d\u00a0 We are absolutely convinced that our life can never be whole or the way we want it to be.
